I Know Someone....
The Pooh Sticks...
From the Peel Session recorded in 1988.
'Ello Cheeky
The song title actually 'I know someone who knows someone that knows Alan McGee quite well' and was released on the Welsh Indie Label Fierce Recordings in 1988.
The Pooh Sticks were from Swansea and as well as melodic jangly guitars they also had plenty of tongue in cheek humour with witty titles and lyrics (as per above). As well as this one other titles include 'On Tape' and 'Indie Pop Ain't Noise Pollution'.
Formation & 'Band'
They formed in 1987, the basis of the band was made up of two core members:
- Steve Gregory - Production/Songwriting
- Hue Williams - Vocals
Other fictitious members of the band included:
- Stephanie Bass-Drum - Drums
- Trudi Tangerine - Tambourine/Piano
- Alison - Bass
- Paul - Guitar
U.S. Breakthrough & Different Sound
They jettisoned the very British indie pop sound on breakthrough in the U.S. Market with their album 'Great White Wonder' in 1991 taking on a more American power pop sound and eventually signing to the major labels. For this album they did call in Amelia Fletcher from the band Heavenly for Vocals. Have to be honest and say I think I prefer the earlier material though. They did go on to release two more albums 'Million Seller' and 'Optimistic Fool' before calling it quits in 1995.
